About GPS Update Reference
GPS Update Reference is an independent publication about navigation maps: what they contain, how they are renewed, and how the makers’ own channels differ from the trade that imitates them.
Last revised October 4, 2026
The short version
An independent, third-party educational publication, written by XYZ LLC. It has no link to any device maker or carmaker and offers no service of any kind.
What the publication is
GPS Update Reference explains how the maps inside navigation devices are renewed. It covers dashboard navigators from Garmin, TomTom, Magellan and Rand McNally, and the navigation systems built into cars, and it describes the scams that have grown up around the phrase “GPS update”.
It is organized in two parts: four field guides on the mechanisms that every maker shares, and five profiles that apply those mechanisms to one maker or one kind of system.
What it does not do
- It performs no map or software update, on any device.
- It offers no software, no product keys and no maps.
- It operates no telephone line, chat service or remote-access tool.
- It does not access, or ask about, anyone’s accounts with any maker.
- It does not diagnose individual devices; each maker’s own documentation covers its products.

How pages are researched
Each page draws on the makers’ own published material, read at the time of writing: manuals, product pages, terms and statements, together with guidance from consumer-protection agencies. Every explainer shows the month in which its facts were last checked. No maker sees a page before publication.
Corrections
Readers who find an error can write to the editorial email above. Confirmed errors are corrected on the page concerned, and the page’s checked date moves with the correction.
