Magellan RoadMate navigators: Wi-Fi models and SmartGPS Eco

Magellan’s RoadMate line now splits in two. Seven newer models fetch maps over Wi-Fi; every other model is pointed by the maker to SmartGPS Eco, a site published under MiTAC International Corporation’s name. This profile sets out which is which and how the genuine addresses read.

Checked against magellangps.com and smartgpseco.com, October 2026.

Magellan’s car navigators are sold under the RoadMate name. The maker’s own page on map upgrades divides the range in two, and which half a unit belongs to decides everything else about how it receives a map.

The models that use Wi-Fi

Seven models make up the first group: the 7771, 7732, 7722, 6722, 6630, 6620 and 6615. According to the maker, these navigators connect to a Wi-Fi network, sign in to an account on the device, and offer map and software releases from their own settings menu.

Nothing else is involved on that route. The device reaches the maker’s servers itself, the same way a phone fetches an app release.

Every other model, and SmartGPS Eco

For every other model, the maker’s page directs owners to SmartGPS Eco. That site’s copyright notice names MiTAC International Corporation, and its menu offers device selection, places, a store and updates. Units in this group reach it through a USB connection to a computer.

What changed is the program. The company once distributed a desktop program called Content Manager for this job. Its name now survives mainly in an address: the page that once carried the program repeats the same division between the seven Wi-Fi models and SmartGPS Eco.

Which route fits which model

As the maker’s own map-upgrade page sets them out.

The 7771, 7732 and 7722

Three of the seven Wi-Fi models. Each connects to a Wi-Fi network, signs in to an account on the device and lists map and software releases in its settings menu.

The 6722, 6630, 6620 and 6615

The remaining four Wi-Fi models, which the maker’s page treats exactly as it treats the 77xx group.

Every other model

The maker sends owners of all other models to SmartGPS Eco, reached through a USB connection to a computer. The site’s copyright notice names MiTAC International Corporation.

What the maker’s page does not say

The maker’s map-upgrade page sets out no prices and no end dates, and it does not use the word lifetime. A paid release for an older model, where one is offered, is a transaction on SmartGPS Eco, whose menu includes a store.

Units that neither route serves do not stop navigating. Like any dashboard navigator, such a unit keeps routing with the last map written into it.

The genuine addresses, and the imitations

Spotting a look-alike update site starts with the address. Two registrable domains matter here: magellangps.com, which is the maker’s, and smartgpseco.com, the SmartGPS Eco site that its own page links to.

https://www.smartgpseco.com/

  • Subdomain: here the familiar www.
  • Registrable domain: the SmartGPS Eco site that the maker’s page links to.
  • Path: the page within that site.
  • https://www.magellangps.com/The maker’s own site, which carries the map-upgrade page.
  • https://www.smartgpseco.com/The site the maker names for every model outside the Wi-Fi group.
  • https://magellan.kb-platform.example/updateThe platform owns this address; the maker’s name is only a label on the left.
  • https://roadmate-maps-update.example/Product names joined together on an unrelated domain.
  • Instant-assistance pages

Articles on general knowledge-base platforms with titles promising immediate assistance with these maps, built around a chat window or a phone number.

  • Map packages for any model

One “package” sold for every model, ignoring the split the maker itself draws between Wi-Fi models and SmartGPS Eco.

  • A program by mail or by link

A file or disc offered as the maker’s updater from an address outside magellangps.com and smartgpseco.com.

  • The remote session

A stranger offering to operate the computer while the navigator is attached.
